The original anti-static carbon fibre vinyl brush. Conductive bristles draw off static while reaching into the grooves to lift dust and grit. The handle and frame are made from recycled plastic.

Hold the brush by the metal body rather than the plastic handle. This matters: the static drains through you, so skin contact with the metal is what completes the path.

With the record spinning, gently lower the bristles into the grooves, just enough to make contact. They should barely bend, there's no need to press, and keeping the touch light also keeps the metal edges of the brush clear of the record so only the carbon fibre meets the vinyl.

Let it travel a full rotation, or a few if the record is dusty, gathering the loose particles as the surface turns. Then angle the bristles towards the outer edge and lift the dust away in a single sweep, carrying it clear.

Static is vinyl's quiet enemy. It pulls dust into the grooves, draws it back the moment you've wiped it away, and sits there as crackle between you and the music. Most brushes just move the dust around. This one was made to deal with the cause, and has been since the 1970s.

AM made the original carbon fibre record brush, and the design has barely needed to change since. The bristles are spun from conductive carbon fibre, but what actually makes the brush anti-static is hidden inside: a small brass pin connecting the aluminium body to the bristles. That pin carries the charge up out of the grooves, through the brush and away through your hand as you hold it. Without it, a carbon brush will still sweep dust about, but it won't drain the static.

It's the part you can't see, and it's the part most copies leave out. Dropping the pin makes a brush cheaper to produce and, however similar it looks, not actually anti-static. Ours has always had it. The same fine fibres reach the bottom of the groove to clear the grit that wears at record and stylus, so you're left with a cleaner record, longer life for your vinyl, and the charge gone rather than just shifted around.
